Fred - My understanding is that the original poster is looking for an physical, non-car grass median.

Oakley square should be extended further through Madison Road.

Extend Oakley through Madison road, all the way to the fresh market/cvs parking lot. Also, replace the small trees with large trees that provide shade, like in Hyde park square. Extending the square up through Madison road(where the majority of shops actually are) will increase the walkability, beauty, and will help buisnesses along Madison.
